On the 3rd of July, Rewire and LEGO Youth had our very FIRST combined event! Which is very exciting because this is the start of our new partnership with LEGO Youth. Simon Wong (leader from LEGO) and I met up multiple times and exchanged endless messages to bring forth a night filled with God’s word and fun! And from this our first combined event was on a very relevant topic of SOCIAL MEDIA.
This was the first time both youth groups came together properly, so we kicked off the night with a small icebreaker game called ‘Human Bingo!’, where youth were each given a sheet of paper with the following categories:
1. Same year group as you
2. Same shoe size
3. Same school
4. Has more than 10 mutual friends with you on Facebook
5. Same number of letters in their first name
6. Born in the same month
Youth then needed to find someone of the OTHER youth group that fit that particular category. It was great to see the youth so keen on talking and meeting the other youth. After the youth got to mingle and talk for a bit, we got into our second activity for the night, and that was the SOCIAL MEDIA TRIVIA.
Teams were split into junior guys, junior girls, senior guys and senior girls, where they were required to answer questions relating to Social Media. Here are just a couple of the type of questions we had:
And from these relatively hard questions, we saw that the senior girls came out on top!
After this, we then moved onto probably the funniest part of the night, which was interviewing our speaker (how is this funny?). Our speaker was Pastor Kenny Liew, who is a pastor of St Matthews Asian Congregation, a church that is in Cherrybrook (up north), and we also learnt that he came to know Christ when he was a teen coming to youth group. Once we got to know him personally, we then wanted to see how in-touch he was with this generation’s Social Media by asking him a few questions, where he had to fill in the blanks.
Q: “When you put on an outfit and you take a selfie which you post on Instagram, a typical comment that would be said is that your outfit is on _______?”
Kenny: “on fire…?”
Q: “When you have exams coming up, but you decide to go play basketball instead, it is said that ball is ________?”
After interviewing Pastor Kenny, we watched an interesting video called the “Innovation of Loneliness” where we were presented with the implications that Social Media has on our everyday relationships.

It then came to the most important part of the night, where Pastor Kenny gave us a talk on ‘The Parable of the Shrewd Manager’ (Luke 16:1-16). We learnt that as followers of Christ we should not waste our possessions (wealth, popularity, etc) for meaningless worldly gains, but rather we should be “shrewd” or smart with what God has blessed us with in order to glorify and make Him known. We are called to be good examples and to be salt and light to those around us, not only loving God, but those who have yet to come to know Jesus. Personally, this talk was a great reminder for me to continue to love and not give up on those who reject Jesus, but rather continue to go after the lost, showing them the love that Jesus showed to us on the cross.
Overall, the night was a great success and it was so awesome to see how many youth come and bringing their friends along. It was so good to see many of the youth taking advantage of this opportunity to meet other Christian youth outside from youth group and church. It was so great to be united as one youth group, under one Body and one God. We hope to make our next combined event an even better and BIGGER one! For those that were there on the night, we will have photos posted up onto our Facebook page soon!
